What should I do if my cath site is sore and swollen post cardiac catheterization?
Groin site:
- If the swelling is larger than a grape (e.g., golf ball sized), please call our office.
- If the swelling is grape sized or smaller, do not be alarmed. The swelling will disappear over time. If the swelling does not reduce or disappear over time, please call our office.
- Bruising and some pain can be expected post catheterization, but abnormal drainage or bleeding will require immediate emergency attention. For abnormal drainage or bleeding, please call our office.
Arm Site:
- If you are experiencing excessive swelling, numbness or tingling, please call
our office. Some swelling and bleeding may be expected.
What Nitroglycerin protocol should I use if I experience chest pain?
- If you do NOT have nitroglycerin, seek emergency attention (i.e., ER or 911)
- If you have nitroglycerin, take it by following these steps:
- Immediately cease all activity and take one tablet or spray dose under tongue.
- Wait 5 minutes. If no relief (i.e., chest pain has not disappeared), take another tablet or spray dose as previously directed.
- Wait 5 more minutes. If no relief, take a third dose and seek emergency attention immediately (i.e., ER or 911).
Does having heart problems affect my ability to have dental work?
- Pre-medication is not required if you now have a stent.
- Pre-medication with antibiotics is required if you have mitral valve prolapse.
- If you have had a heart attack, stent, angioplasty, bypass surgery, or valve surgery, you may NOT have dental work for 3 months following the procedure.
Does having a pacemaker or stent affect my ability to have an MRI scan?
- If you have had a stent, you may NOT have an MRI for 8 weeks following the procedure.
- If you have a pacemaker, you may NOT have an MRI.
